If you don't have spyware removal software installed on your PC then you are leaving yourself open to attack. Today the amount of malicious code floating around the internet is at epidemic proportions. Every time we surf the net or open our email accounts we are at risk of infecting our hard drives with potentially dangerous malware.


A spyware removal application is very similar in nature to anti-virus software. It will scan various drives and files in search of dangerous programs and then present you with a record of the results. The signature of spyware is not the same as a virus therefore the software will use a different method to identify threats.


Your anti-virus software may be able to identify spyware as being present in your system but most will not be able to remove the problem. For this you will need a dedicated program. Typically they will first block the malicious program or code and then ask you whether or not too proceed with the removal.


You may discover that the actual spyware is in your computer's registry. From here it is tricky to remove. Even if you have knowledge of computer programming it is not advisable to attempt to remove the problem by yourself manually as you may end up corrupting the operating system and rendering your data irrecoverable.


There are both free and paid options in spyware removal software. The tools and features will depend on how much you pay. It may be best to look for an application that will also monitor your downloads and browsing for spyware.


Also, a free option will not have a database which is updated so regularly. This is important as there are new spyware definitions being released every day. The application should automatically download the latest information that is required to maintain security.
